Your piano type: grand piano or vertical piano?

right (5K)
Grand piano.
Grand pianos are classified as such, because the piano strings run horizontally.
They are from 4 feet to 9 feet in length and normally have three legs. Depending upon length, the
shortest are commonly called baby grand pianos and the longest is called a concert grand piano.

left (5K)
Vertical piano.
Vertical pianos are classified as such, because the piano strings run vertically.
They are from 35 to 50+ inches in height and normally have two legs in the front and two casters in the rear. Depending upon
height, starting with the shortest, they are commonly called spinet pianos, console pianos, studio pianos, and upright pianos.

Note:
Some old vertical pianos have the description of "cabinet grand piano" or something similar on the key board lid.
That was a promotional designation for what is actually an "upright" sized vertical piano which produces a volume
similar to a small grand piano but that does not classify it as a grand piano, as the strings still run vertically.

The size of your piano?

Grand pianos:
These pianos are measured by the total length with the top closed,
along the top surface, front to back, from the very front of the ledge
that is in front of the key board lid, to the very back of the top lid.

The easiest way to measure:
Hook the tape measure over the very back of the top lid.
From the front of the piano, pull the tape foward until it extends past the front of the piano.
Then look down and gauge the measurement to ledge in front of the key board lid.

Quotations are based on these six lengths:
4' (48-59"), 5' (60-71"), 6' (72-83"), 7' (84-95"), 8' (96-107"), and 9' (108" and over).

Vertical pianos:
These pianos are measured by the total height of
the side casing, from the top lid to the floor.

The easiest way to measure:
At the bottom of the side casing, place the tape end on the floor.
Then pull the tape upwards until it extends past the top of the piano.
Look sideways and gauge the measurement to the top surface of the lid.

Quotations are based on these four heights:
spinet (35-39"), console (40-44"), studio (45-49"), and upright (50" and over).
