Piano lessons for children and adults:
lead sheets vs. sheet music
For most children and adults, learning to play the piano by first
learning to read traditional sheet music, is tedious and boring.
The result is that they soon lose interest.
The solution realized by only a few music teachers, is that
the most enjoyable and easiest way to learn to play piano,
is by learning to read music lead sheets, not sheet music,
further explained below in the next section on tutorials.
Lead sheets not only make learning to play the piano much easier
but also, allows one to explore their own music creativity which
nurtures the love of music necessary to later pursue if desired,
the discipline of learning to read traditional sheet music.
Finding a teacher who teaches piano with lead sheets, is not easy,
as most teachers still adamantly rely upon traditional sheet music
but with some diligence, you will find a teacher who makes playing
the piano a very enjoyable and much easier learning experience.
Lead sheet tutorials for children and adults:
Here are some beginning books and videos on easily learning how
to play the piano in any music genre: classical, jazz, blues, etc., by
reading simplified lead sheets, rather than traditional sheet music.
Play piano in a flash, by Scott Houston
For both children and adults, his tutorials and videos provide a
simple, painless introduction to playing the piano with lead sheets.
How to Play the Piano Despite Years of Lessons, by Ward Cannel.
A more advanced introduction to lead sheets for adults and precocious children
who have some previous musical training or have completed the above tutorials.
Finding lead sheets (fake books):
Lead sheets are also called "fake books" when they are a
collection and that is a misleading terminology, as many
professional musicians also use various kinds of fake books
The term "fake" evolved from the simplicity of the lead sheet format which
lends itself to improvisation and such improvisations were then termed faking
the music but that is a misnomer, as a high level of musical skill is required
for jazz and blues performances which are intrinsically improvisational and
also, classical performances in a jazz mode, where the musician wishes to
build upon an original composition, rather than render it strictly as written.
Here is a good selection of fake books for children and adults:

This is a different link than the above tutorial link
and it provides many additional types of fake books.
Fake books are also now called real books:
The term "real books" was coined in order to differentiate them from some
earlier fake books which were illegal, as the composers received no royalties.
Here is an excellent index of legal fake books and real books:
This index is searchable to find music and song titles.
